EMDR THERAPY
Heal the Memories That Still Hold You
Trauma doesn't have to define your future.
AT START, WE MEET YOU WHERE YOU ARE
Whether you're dealing with a single traumatic event or complex trauma that spans years, EMDR offers a path toward healing that honors your pace and your needs.
Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help you process traumatic memories and distressing experiences that feel stuck in your body and mind.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn't require you to relive or describe traumatic events in detail. Instead, it uses bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones) to help your brain reprocess memories in a way that reduces their emotional charge.
EMDR is based on the understanding that trauma disrupts your brain's natural healing process. When something overwhelming happens, the memory can get "stuck," causing symptoms like flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, panic, or emotional numbness. EMDR helps your brain complete the processing it couldn't finish at the time of the trauma, allowing you to integrate the experience and move forward.
EMDR has been extensively researched and is recognized by organizations like the American Psychological Association, the World Health Organization, and the Department of Veterans Affairs as an effective treatment for PTSD, anxiety, depression, panic disorders, and more.
OUR APPROACH TO EMDR THERAPY
We know that trauma lives in the body, not just the mind.
That's why our approach to EMDR is both gentle and powerful, creating safety first and allowing your nervous system to lead the way. Our approach is:
Trauma-Informed
We understand that healing requires safety. We won't rush you. We'll build trust, establish grounding techniques, and ensure you feel prepared before processing begins.
Integrative
EMDR is powerful on its own, but we often combine it with other modalities like IFS, somatic therapy, and creative arts therapy to support your whole self.
Person-Centered
Your trauma is unique. Your healing will be too. We tailor every EMDR session to fit your specific needs, history, and readiness.
Certified & Experienced
Our therapists are trained and certified in EMDR, with extensive experience supporting clients through trauma recovery.
You Don't Have To Carry This Alone Anymore
Let's process it together.
How EMDR Therapy Benefits You
EMDR offers profound benefits for people dealing with trauma, anxiety, and emotional distress:
Reduces Intensity of Traumatic Memories
EMDR helps your brain reprocess memories so they no longer trigger the same overwhelming emotions or physical reactions. The memory doesn't disappear, but it loses its power over you.
Improves Self-Perception
Trauma often leaves behind negative beliefs like "I'm not safe," "I'm broken," or "It's my fault." EMDR helps you reprocess these beliefs and replace them with healthier, more accurate perspectives.
Relieves PTSD Symptoms
Flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, and intrusive thoughts can significantly decrease or resolve entirely through EMDR treatment.
Works Faster Than Traditional Talk Therapy
Many clients experience significant relief in fewer sessions compared to traditional approaches. EMDR's efficiency makes it a powerful option for trauma recovery.
Decreases Anxiety & Panic
By addressing the root memories that fuel anxiety, EMDR helps you feel calmer, safer, and more grounded in the present moment.
Doesn't Require Detailed Retelling
You don't have to relive your trauma or share every painful detail. EMDR works with your brain's natural healing process, allowing you to process without re-traumatization.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Common Questions About EMDR Therapy
-
EMDR follows a structured eight-phase process. Early sessions focus on history-taking, preparation, and building coping skills. Once you're ready, we'll identify a target memory and begin bilateral stimulation (usually following my fingers with your eyes, or using tapping or audio tones). You'll notice what comes up—thoughts, feelings, body sensations—while the bilateral stimulation helps your brain reprocess the memory. Sessions typically last 60 to 90 minutes.
-
No. EMDR doesn't erase memories. It changes how your brain stores and responds to them. After EMDR, you'll still remember what happened, but the memory will feel less intense, less triggering, and less present in your daily life. It becomes something that happened to you, not something that's still happening.
-
While EMDR is incredibly effective for PTSD, it's also used to treat anxiety, depression, phobias, panic disorders, grief, attachment issues, and more. If you've experienced anything that feels "stuck" or continues to impact your life, EMDR might be helpful.
-
Yes. Virtual EMDR is just as effective as in-person sessions. We use online platforms that allow for bilateral stimulation through visual, auditory, or tactile methods. Many clients find virtual EMDR convenient and equally powerful.
-
It depends on your history and what you're working through. Some people experience significant relief in just a few sessions, especially if they're addressing a single traumatic event. Complex trauma may take longer. We'll work at your pace and check in regularly about your progress.
